Keep the folder Claude works in synced with Google Drive. Your team opens the .md files in Google Docs and edits them there, and Claude reads the same files on your computer. Since October 2026, Docs edits Markdown files without converting them (Google).

One condition: your account needs the new feature. When you open a .md file in Docs, you should see an .md tag next to the title (Google Docs Help). Google started rolling it out on October 5, 2026, and says it can take up to 15 days to reach everyone. Personal Google accounts get it too.

What changed?

Before, sharing a file Claude wrote meant uploading it and opening it as a Google Doc. That made a copy. Your team edited the copy, and the .md file Claude reads never changed. To bring their edits back, you had to download the Doc as Markdown and replace the original by hand.

Now the file stays an .md file. Google’s help page says it plainly: “Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays an .md file, kept in Drive.” When a teammate edits it, the change syncs back to your folder, and Claude sees it the next time it reads the file.

If your account doesn’t have the feature yet, you’ll still get the old behavior. When I tried on October 6, Docs created a new file called test.md.gdoc next to my test.md. My edits went into the new file, and the original stayed the same.

How do I set it up?

  1. Install Google Drive for desktop. In its settings, add the folder Claude works in and choose to sync it with Google Drive. The folder stays where it is, with a full copy on your computer, and changes sync both ways.
  2. In Google Drive on the web, find the folder under Computers and share it with your team.
  3. Your teammates double-click a .md file. It opens in Docs in Markdown mode, and they can edit and comment like any other document. They don’t need to know Markdown.
  4. Keep working in the same folder with Claude Code. Codex works the same way, since it reads the same files.

If double-clicking still creates a .gdoc copy, check for the .md tag. No tag means the feature hasn’t reached that account yet. Delete the copy so nobody edits the wrong file.

What does Docs keep, and what does it drop?

Markdown can’t hold everything Docs can do, so some formatting is lost when the file is saved. Google lists three things: smart chips become text or links, HTML becomes plain text, and font colors, highlights and text alignment are removed. If something gets lost, you can get it back from File → Version history.

Comments are less clear. Google says “you can keep your comments and formatting when you reopen your document in Google Docs or in other tools,” but doesn’t say whether comments are written into the .md file. Until that’s clear, assume Claude can’t see them. If you want Claude to act on feedback, ask your team to write it into the text.

Google also hasn’t said how Docs handles YAML front matter, footnotes or [[wiki links]]. If a file depends on those, such as a skill’s SKILL.md, edit it on your computer rather than in Docs.

Where do you write on your computer?

Docs handles your team’s side: reading, commenting and small edits. On your computer, you still need a place to write Markdown with Claude.

You can try our app, StashBase. Open the synced folder as a project:

  • Read and edit your .md files beside a chat with Claude Code, Codex or Antigravity.
  • Claude’s edits show up in the document as suggested changes you accept or reject, one by one.
  • If a file changed somewhere else before you saved, for example in Docs, you can compare the two versions.
  • Your files stay ordinary .md files, which is why Docs can open them.

We had planned to build cloud collaboration into StashBase. With Docs editing Markdown natively, we’re holding off. If your team finds something missing, tell us in Discord.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Docs convert Markdown files into Google Docs?

Not anymore. Since October 2026, Docs opens .md files in Markdown mode and saves them as .md. If your account doesn't have the feature yet, opening the file with Docs still makes a separate Google Doc.

How do I know my account has native Markdown editing?

Open a .md file in Docs. If you see an .md tag next to the title, you're editing the original file. Google is rolling the feature out over up to 15 days from October 5, 2026.

Can Claude read comments my team leaves in Google Docs?

Google hasn't said whether comments are written into the .md file. If you want Claude to see feedback, ask your team to write it in the text itself.
