Yes — Claude Desktop can read, edit, and create files on your computer. The built-in way is Cowork, included in every paid Claude plan on macOS and Windows: you connect a folder, and Claude reads, edits, and creates the files inside it.

How to give Claude Desktop access to a folder
- Open the Claude desktop app. Folder access runs through the desktop app, and it has to stay open while Claude works with your files. Sessions you start on the web or your phone can’t reach your folders.
- Select Cowork in the message box, then connect the folder you want Claude to work in. If there’s no Chat/Cowork switch, your app has the newer version where they’re one Claude: connect the folder in any conversation.
- Describe the task and pick a permission mode. Claude can now read, edit, and create files in that folder.
What the permission modes mean
Cowork has three modes controlling how much Claude asks before acting:
- Manual — Claude pauses and asks before each action.
- Auto — Claude keeps working without asking, and an automatic safety check reviews each action and blocks unsafe ones.
- Skip all approvals — no pauses and no checks.
The newer, merged version offers Manual and Auto. In every mode, Claude asks before permanently deleting a file.
Start with Manual or Auto on a folder that matters. Whatever the mode, access stays bounded: Claude can only read and write inside folders you’ve connected, nothing outside them.
What “local” does and doesn’t mean
Your files stay in your folder, with nothing to upload or re-download, and finished work is saved back there. But since October 6, 2026, new Cowork sessions on Pro and Max run in Anthropic’s cloud. When a task needs a file, Claude fetches a copy of just that file through the desktop app, and the copies are deleted when you delete the session. Commands and code run in an isolated sandbox on Anthropic’s servers, not on your computer (architecture). “Local” here means the files stay put, not that their contents never leave your machine.

Beyond Cowork: MCP servers in Claude Desktop
Claude Desktop is also an MCP client, so it can take desktop extensions and connectors that grant file capabilities beyond folder browsing — for example the reference filesystem MCP server for raw file operations over allowed directories.
